Upper and lower fixed prosthesis

Upper and lower fixed prosthesis: full arch rehabilitation while preserving back teeth

Maria, patient at Odontoclinic Vila Mariana

This video and the patient testimonial below were recorded in Portuguese. A summary in English follows.

"I thought I would need a month off, I did not! I can have it done on a Friday and go to work normally on Monday."
Maria

What Maria shares in the video

  • She put off treatment for years because she believed she would need all her teeth extracted and feared being left without teeth.
  • She learned about Dr. Hugo's work on Facebook, after seeing another patient's result.
  • She thought she would need a month off but had it done on a Friday and was back at work on Monday.
  • She received definitive fixed prostheses on both the upper and lower arches.
  • The plan preserved back teeth to maintain natural bite references.
  • She decided at the consultation, because of the confidence she felt, and says she would do it all again.
  • She used to be embarrassed to smile or take photos. Today she smiles without hesitation.

The clinical decision, in Dr. Hugo's words

"On Maria's initial panoramic x-ray, we saw extensive tooth loss in both arches and remaining teeth in different conditions of support. The indication was a full arch fixed rehabilitation of the upper and lower arches, but that did not mean removing every tooth indiscriminately.

My plan was conservative. I kept back teeth that were in condition to be preserved because they maintain natural bite references. Those references help register the relationship between the arches and define the position of the prostheses, while also preserving biological structure whenever that benefits the patient.

With the 3D CT scan and intraoral scan, we planned the necessary extractions, the distribution of the implants and the relationship between the upper and lower prostheses before surgery. The goal was support, stability and occlusal balance for the rehabilitation of both arches.

On the same day we performed the indicated extractions, placed the implants and delivered the definitive upper and lower fixed prostheses. Maria did not go through a period without teeth, and as she herself describes, she had the procedure on a Friday and was back at work on Monday."

The meeting behind the case

From fear of being toothless to wanting to smile

Maria arrived afraid of spending months without teeth and unsure whether everything could really be done the same day. Today she returns to the clinic smiling, with both arches rehabilitated and the confidence of someone who no longer hides her smile in photos.
